FightingSeraph's News

I thought I'd post some stuff pertaining to one overlooked character. First off, the Super NES game:

From the same people behind the equally underrated Skyblazer; this game mixed platforming and fighting together. I personally thought that this wasn't bad by any means, but could have used some tweaks in its favor. The music and graphics are great for a Super NES game.

Spawn: Armageddon for PS2, GC, and X-Box

Spawn: In the Demon's Hand (Arcade and Dreamcast)

And here's the short-lived animated series...

Not the best animation, but the writing and voice acting compensate for it.

Regarding the subject being used as NG fodder: I think more people should consider using McFarlane's series as spoof material in the vein of Gotham Heat and any parody by Wogoat.

This game is the kind of thing that would be the result of Evil Dave teaming up with Celx Requin, Krinkels, Mottis, Catoblepas, Em Kaah, and Doomhammr with hard drugs thrown in for good measure. Here's Hardcore Gaming 101's article: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/hotlinemiami/ho tlinemiami.htm

Oh, and Apple just blocked The Best Page In the Universe from their stores.
http://thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=appl e_store_ban

Finally More music...

Texas Faggot - Back to Mad

I thank Andrew Dickman for discovering this song and using it in Rockman Neo.

Teahman - Serenity

This is the first version of the song.

Here's the second version, which has percussion. If only Hania Lee could sound this good...

Update: Here's some more musicians I found:

I've already wrote three posts on series I'm tired of, and writing a fourth one. So, I'll change gears to series that ought to be continued/finished.

1. Joe Zombie: Of course, I'm talking about the current Joe Zombie series that has voice acting and swift 3D effects. To be honest, this was better directed, written, and acted than Xombie ever was. I hope Rob DenBleyker takes a break from Cyanide & Happiness and finishes this one up.

2. Keegan's Truck: In spite of bad graphics, I have to say that Doug knew how to direct and time those bad drawings like a master. That and his story writing has gotten better with each installment, along with his animating. Here's hoping that he finishes this series and teams up with someone who's better at drawing/animating.

3. Power of the Geek: It's too bad the fourth installment didn't get finished, because I was looking forward to its climax. If anyone has the .fla, I wouldn't mind seeing someone continue where Ben left off.

4. All Fads Die!: What is with part six and why is Radioactive24 letting it gather dust? I mean, when Logo was in charge,
these were released on a consistent basis. Besides, I know plenty of things that deserve obliteration.

5. You Are A Fucking Moron: Why not? I love a good roast cartoon, and The Walrus needs to get off of his ass and rip apart more celebrity filth.

6. Soul Defiance: The original cartoon pilot may be flawed, but I see that Fanewgie has potential to become a very brilliant director. That, and he beat TTA to the punch in terms of the concept behind it.

7. Anything by Dean Packis: I love sick and twisted humor, and his cartoons meet that demand with a early NG brand of raw and crude that has all but faded from the site. Too bad he ends up getting low scores because of that because he's one of the most under-appreciated contributors on here. Now if only he teamed up with Catoblepas, Peixeaquatico, Evil Dave, and Golfinho...

Why not? NG has strayed off the road less traveled in a weak attempt at competing with the likes of YouTube, along with paying lip-service to non-innovative mobile bullshit that can't do the most rudimentary of functions(http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.ne t/c.cgi?u=iphone). I honestly think that NG has lost focus in these past three years, and it's time to rediscover what made it great in the first place. This site shouldn't be following stupid trends into a deathtrap; it should be more like the Fleischer brothers, Jim Tyer at Terrytoons, Van Beuren, Ralph Bakshi, John K, Peter Chung, Mike Judge, Death Metal, Aggro tech, Psytrance, Michael Sporn, Don Hertzfeldt, and whatnot. Yet, the Audio and Art portals can stay since there's still excellent stuff being submitted. Now, here's some things that I believe would improve this site:

1. Assassin needs to be brought back.
Face it, celebrity killing is a part of this site whether you like it or not. It kills me that many people here look upon killing some crappy musician as "lame", but have no problem with Madness Combat or Bunnykill. If it's ok to have a cartoon about one guy killing a shitload of others, then it's perfectly fine to depict Justin Penor getting sliced in half, Jaxxy getting boiled in oil, or Poxpower getting an abortion performed with a stick of dynamite.
2. NG and its userbase should let go of YouTube.
I have already complained about the video upload invite being redundant and prone to being misused by those who get it (http://fightingseraph.newgrounds.com/news/post/
809805
), so repeating that statement is a moot point. Rather, people like Psychic Pebble, Artist Lamer Gal, Gonzossm, etc. should reconsider posting more flash on there than here. I know they're doing it for easy money because of Eddsworld, but is it really worth following in Edd's footsteps and ultimately looking like whores/sellouts? I wouldn't have a big problem with this if they were making good cartoons on a consistent basis, but aside from Zach, they aren't. People on here should forget about easy money and do something that does far more than get YouTube subscriptions, paltry revenue, appease the HD/After Effects/Toon Boom gods, put on the iDroid Crapp store, bullshit awards, or movie/DVD/Comic publishing deals. Just get a regular job and make something that isn't just better, but unique. In addition, do we really need to convert all of our flash cartoons into video files just to pursue an illusory quality? It's just a step in the wrong direction that has no fucking benefit what-so-ever. Anyone who says otherwise needs to take off the rose-colored glasses.
3. Expand the under judgment system to the Audio and Art sections and encourage musicians and artists to collaborate with animators, directors, writers, programmers, and game designers.
Why not? It's about time they implemented this (Flash) Portal feature to the other sections as well. At least it will curb random songs getting zero bombed regardless of quality. Also, it would be nice if more people turned to the AP instead of milking Kevin Macleod dry. Why can't various animators/directors/game designers get Dragon Knight Tara, Mason Hunter, Lich Lord Music, Druox, TimmyDope, Box-Killa, NIGHTkilla, 1600, Tremulos, Apatheria, Arnas, or Durn? Oh, and all of you musician and artist types should get in the habit of reviewing other types of submissions.
4. Encourage more Libertarian-leaning contributions.
We all know that the Democrats are just as bad as the Republicans, and the Libertarian Party and the Cato Institute know why. It's about time Newgrounds stopped getting its thoughts fed to it from Ebolaworld, Sirkowski, Jordan Duchnycz, Jak Baron King, and Notorious. Why can't this site have more people such as Steve Kubby, Wayne Allyn Root, Dan J. Mitchell, or Lew Rockwell?
5. Encourage people to study the right material.
Aside from the fundamental skills of animation, direction, game design, etc.; people on here can learn a lot more from silent films, classic cartoons, old rock groups, newspaper comics, old arcade games, and movie soundtracks. To quote Ralph Bakshi: "There's more to learn from a Fleischer Popeye than some epic fantasy such as The Prince of Egypt."

In other words, you may not like what has been said, but I think skepticism and honesty are better than blind idealism and ass-kissing.

Update: For those who are confused or pissed off, here's what I am trying to say: I don't believe that tacking on as many features as possible is going to make NG better. Rather than follow the HD/iNooKindexurface/Toon Boom/After Effects/Premiere craze into a death trap; why not offer different, if not unique content? Making Newgrounds into another YouTube/Vimeo is self-defeating, inane, and insipid. Truth be told, I can't tell the difference between 224-350 Kbps music from regular 128, nor can I see how 1280*720 or higher resolution .mpeg video will make the cartoons better. That is just irresponsible, wasteful, asinine, and superficial. I had a hunch that a YouTube-style video uploader would
be misused and abused by those who get the invite, and I was right about that. By contrast, the Audio and art portals should stay due to the great stuff (and sometimes crap) that gets posted in those two sections. Newgrounds has strayed off its own path just to get in on some bullshit trends. In other words, I am trying to get more people here to think very carefully instead of blindlyembracing whatever new thing that the staff has created regardless if it will help or hinder.
Will NG be wiped from the face of the net? Nope.
Will it be enhanced? Not really.
Oh, and a few more things:
1. I was using Jaxxy, Pox, Zach, Gonzo, Laura, and Edd as examples.
2. What Maddox said regarding the iPhone, iPad, and their competitors is proof that he knows what the fuck he's talking about.
3. I have no problem with people submitting video here as long it has actual effort put into it. It is when people submit regular flash cartoons as video in the name of HD, After Effects, Premiere, lame-ass mobile bullshit, and Toon Boom is aggravating as fuck. Honestly, people have been submitting video on NG before YouTube.
4. Here's another reason why I have a distaste towards the High Def craze: http://www.wayofthepixel.net/index.php?topic=151 10.0
I hope that this clairifies what I said and nobody zero bombs or bans me for getting what I felt out of my system.

This was posted by Lt Plissken a few hours ago:
Hello there my friend, first of all I want to wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year,
all the happiness and joy on this world, lots of drawing hours in the future. I've kind of missed you,
and all the veterans who disappeared from the earlier days. Fortunately you didn't disappeared,
you made a pause but you came back, and I feel very good about that.
Last years March, then was the last time I've visited, and you are right, that was a loooong time
ago. Honestly I almost forgot your sketchbook, lots of happenings on conceptart.org and lots
of movement, I am getting older, and it's hard to remember everything. However I am trying to
stay in shape and to keep in touch with my ol' mates.
I've scrolled back a few pages, and I observed again your earlier and latest drawings. Then I
glanced on the comment above, about you not improving at all over the last three or four years.
Well, this is a very tricky subject and can be discussed in many ways from many aspects. There
are many ways you could look a drawing or any art piece in general. Million people, million different
thoughts, expectations and opinions. There are also standards, which are acceptable,
likable or aesthetics that the general population will accept. There are commercialized paintings,
ugly in some kind of way, but still more effectively sold and accepted, than any other beauty out
there that never saw the sun, cause lack of promotion. For me, your art is great, your drawings
are ok, and the most important your consistency and never give up approach is priceless. However
I agree that there are very few and very slow improvements visible over these few years. My humble
opinion is that you have something that is literally blocking you from doing major advancements.
I don't know what it is, but there is something. It could be a mental blockade, a fear, an emotion,
lack of something, it's a heavy psychological question. Would compare the scenario with a sport
related subject. For example, a kickboxer, you know the guy who fight in the ring, a kickboxer
have his goals, and training schedules planned in forth. So one of his main goal, and weapon is
a high kick. But at this point he is unable to achieve it, due to lack of skill, flexibility and overall
strength training. So the high kick is at head height, but he is stuck at low kicks, at knee height.
You are also stuck with the kick at knee height. You cannot push it forward, you cannot go higher.
Sometimes you managed to pull out a hip height kick, but then instantly you dropped back to your
previous level. Something is preventing you. If you really want to improve, you should approach the
problem wisely and strategically. The kickboxer, would sit down, and try to figure out, what should
he do next, what is the thing that is preventing him to go higher with his kick. Could it be that he
doesn't do enough strength exercises, could it be that he doesn't stretch enough, or could it just be
that he doing all that, but he never mastered the correct technique and the correct form.
The same way, you should eliminate the problem, you should find the spot that can push you
forward and make significant improvements. It could require a mentor, a teacher, someone else
who is honest, beside you, just like an athlete need a trainer. Maybe it's an impossible mission
to go alone into this, maybe you need someone to aid you day by day. You have to have something,
a switch inside of you, you just need to find it. You definitely have the most important ingredients
for art. You have the will, you have the strength required, the determination, and I think that you
have also put your heart and soul into all this. And you know what they say, if you put your heart
into something, there is not an option for failure. You just believe in your self. I want to help you
somehow and not to leave an empty 'good job' reply again, which I did many many times before.
I want to be honest, and be open so I could help you. Just as I said I like your drawings, and your
dedication, you already achieved a lot, by not quitting all these years, and not throwing away the
pencils. There are many others who tried, got frustrated and gave up on the subject. You achieved
much more then them, you have something special inside you, you shine on your own way, and
yes you have a gift, even if someone say that you don't have.
Well, roughly those are my thoughts
about the improved, not improved subject. I think that you improved, you just need a bit harder
kickstart, to bring the technical side of your skills to another level. That is if you want to improve,
cause I never asked, do you want to improve? I totally understand if someone don't want to
improve, cause not all of us who like to draw and paint, necessarily wants to improve. If you do
things just for fun, and for relaxation sake, then forget all that I said, in that case, you don't need
to put yourself under any kind of pressure or override your system abilities, by banging your head
up against a wall, and asking how to improve.
In the end of this lengthy post, I want to thank you that you visited my book, and that you didn't
forget about me and my work, and the most important that you still support me. I support you
and your art fully also, and I feel proud, that I know someone dedicated and true, as you are.
You post more, think positive, draw, and never give up.

The only other person that had posted similar critiques is Conny Nordlund (Loathsome). I hope those words that were posted inspire someone on here.

Infected Mushroom - Devil

Infected Mushroom - Gamma Goblins Remix

Kudos go to Mottis for using this kick ass song.

Hallucinogen - Gamma Goblins

The original two-part song that spawned a shitload of remixes.

Infected Mushroom - Over Mode

The part at 4:40 is my favorite of this song, and I thank Ironclaw for using this in the third Kung-Fu cartoon he made.

KMFDM - Inane

Another great discovery by Mottis, but this time it's industrial rock.

Xorcist - Erlicheda

I found out about these guys from Hardcore Gaming 101's article on Bad Mojo.

Xorcist - You Are The One

What can I say?

Penta - Olympia

A really badass Dark Psytrance song from Russia!

Oxidaksi - Constructed For Distraction

Hypnotic Mushroom - Dark Express

Not to be confused with the aforementioned IM.

Orca - La La Land

Orca - Paranoid

Cosmo - Ice Wind

Hypnotic Mushroom - S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Hypnotic Mushroom - Horror

Orca - Tina Tomorrow

Orca - La La Li

My Favorite song from Orca so far.

So, what do you think of these songs I found? In addition, I'm trying to make my own Psytrance track, but suck at designing the sound aside from a bass in LMMS.

I am not going to lie to you guys, this has been the most disappointing year on record for NG with 2008 being a close second. Johnkilo has said this before in his reasons for finally leaving, but I'm mostly unsatisfied with how this year was:

1. The current design is weak.
Not to hurt the staff's feelings, but it is. A shitload of the functions that were part of the site since the beginning of the automated Flash portal are gone. For example, the drop-down box that has other submissions for various authors in the Movie, Game, and Audio sections. In addition, I also don't like how the Game and Movie sections are setup like the Art portal. To be honest, I preferred how the last design of the site handled those sections. On the other hand, the inclusion of MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, and Skype (kind of pointless) was nice, along with the RSS feed regarding favorite authors. Oh, and while I do like the streamlined search function, it would also be appreciated if they also added the ability to search by author.
2. NG is too focused on copying other sites rather than being itself.
In spite of having a Facebook account, I never liked "social" media. While the news log implemented years ago was great, I'm sick of NG trying be another MySpace/Facebook. Hell, I also see little point in the new video uploader. Seriously, you can just import a video into flash, tweak the weight/quality, add buttons/preloader, and done. Of course, it is nice for those who have potentially great stuff, but have no knowledge of how flash works (Kellz5460 and and various 3D animators) or have .swf files that can't be optimized below 35-40MB without severely compromising the audio quality (Rambojoe's rotoscope flash). But for people who get the invite to submit regular flash cartoons as video files is ostentatious, wasteful, asinine, and irresponsible. Furthermore, there's also little point in using After Effects outside of 3D animation. Regardless of how well integrated it is into the animation, the results are usually ugly and distracting. Plus, the only Flash submissions on NG that have made good use of the program are MK vs SF 3 and The Moon Guardian. Why? Take a look at the following cartoons:
Final Fantasy Last Mages
Micwizard
MicMadness
All of their effects were done with just Flash and maybe a tiny bit of photoshop. This also explains why I'm not impressed with Toon Boom. In other words, NG should let the YouTube, Social network, iNooKindexurface, HD, After Effects, Toon Boom, Steam, and Ouya things go and rediscover its roots.
3. Ad Revenue is a double-edged sword.
It may be nice to make some easy money, but the pay from that revenue is lousy. And I'm not just talking about the Flash ads, YouTube has a role in this as well. Is it really worth mere cents to post uninspired, predictable, lethargic, uncreative, unfunny material on YouTube? The only exception to the content quip is Psychicpebble, an animator who I don't always agree with.
4. Most of the frontpage material is lackluster; expert, but empty.
Don't get me wrong, there are still great stuff that has been submitted here; but most of the high-profile cartoons turned out to be "great animation, so what?" Some of them weren't even good to begin with in spite of the time and effort that went into them. (Example: Lucky Day Forever) Hell, even Harry Partridge has been disappointing, but that has been for quite a while. It makes me turn to Roger van der Weide, Aztraz, Catoblepas, WoodenSneakers, Golfinho, Peixeaquatico, Aaron Chapman (n0g0d), Evil Dave, and Dean Packis for my fix of hilarity.
5. Randy Solem's Death
This is going to be quite polarizing, but the news of his death was more distressing than Edd Gould dying from cancer. Unlike most of the people who make game spoofs, he was always finding new games to riff on and knew how to time a joke. It also didn't help that he was in the process of making a comeback with a remake of his first Flash and Zelda: A Link to Chaos.
On the other hand, it's not all incessant, inane bitching. Here's some good that has come out this year:
1. Golfinho has finally gotten some well-deserved recognition for his talent.
It saddens me that he, along with the aforementioned Aztraz & Co. are accused of lowering standards while hideously unfunny dipshits continue to get their mediocre shit put on the front page for far longer than they should. Yuri needs be put alongside Randy Solem, Ben Spurgin, Egoraptor, Krinkels, Adam Philips, and others I can't mention as one of NG's Greatest animators.
2. Abobo's Big Adventure: This has got to be the best Flash game of the year! While it does have a few kinks that could have been ironed out, I have gotten more enjoyment out of this than the vast majority of games that have submitted here. RoG and co. deserve to be commended for this gem of a game. However, many of the references at the ending were inane and had little to do with the NES. While Mega Man Next Remix is still in the works, I doubt that it will top this.
3. Double Dragon-A Dragon's Tale: This is one of those rare submissions that justify the video uploader's existence considering that Rambojoe couldn't get the .swf under 35-40 MB without compromising the sound. I just love how he mixed his brand of comedy with rotoscoping to get a result similar to what Friz Freleng did with Sports Chumpions. Oh, and the same applies to Dooumb.
4. LMMS: Even though Acid has VST support, this has much more in terms of power, versatility, and flexibility. Though I have yet to make something worthwhile, it has been enjoyable except for two things: A) third party plug-ins tend to crash with the current version I'm using (0.4.13), & B) There aren't enough tutorials on how to design sound with its standard VSTs.

Hopefully, 2013 will be a better year for NG than this one.

Toccata and Fugue with a TB-303

Isn't this cool or what? Classical music meets the Acid sub-genre of House, Techno, and Trance; two things that don't usually mix, but it's still impressive.

'80s-style minimal house

This is really catchy for something that's so simplistic.

Hard Trance on an MC-303

A little something for Hard Trance fans.

Minimal Psytrance on a Korg ESX

What can I say? I love Psytrance and am trying to make my own psy tracks in LMMS, but haven't made something worth submitting yet. It doesn't help that LMMS 0.4.13 tends to crash when using third-party plug-ins. That sucks shit. Maybe I ought to get Presonus Studio One if that problem doesn't get addressed soon.

Minimal Techno on an EMX

The track is titled Alter Falter, and for something so minimal; it sounds like real Techno.

As my video limit is up, here's some stuff from the Cato Institute of all things:

Alex Thissen's Atari Lynx development tutorials
Here's a gift for those who remember the Lynx.

Atari Protos on Astro Grover
This was one of the very few children's games for the 5200.

Battlemorph
A StarFox clone for the Jaguar CD that was also one of the few games that utilized its Pro controller.

Total Carnage
This almost got released, but didn't until Songbird Productions picked it back up in '05.

Desert Falcon
Atari's attempt at a Zaxxon clone that was also a 7800 title.

Halloween
Another attempt at a horror game that turned out to suck.

Kung-Fu Master

As for Atari itself, it is a pity that far too few people remember what they used to be back in the '70s, '80s, and early-to-mid '90s. However, I would like to thank Infogrames for bringing the namesake back, along with re-hiring one of the company's co-founders.

Space Gun

It was obvious that Taito was inspired by Alien while making this. Also, they were one of the few third-party developers for the system who made quality stuff.

Rampart

Port of one of my favorite Atari arcade games, though I have it on Midway Arcade Treasures. By the way, Tengen was the console-publishing division for Atari Games, inc. In addition, Atari was split into three separate companies when the Video Game Crash hit.

Super Space Invaders

This needs no further explanation.

Cloud Master/Chuuka Taisen

Hot B did a great job at porting this game, and this is one of the rare few titles that had FM chip support. (Only the JP version of the SMS had this.)

Darius 2/Sagaia

Possibly the only Master System game that had parallax scrolling.

As an added bonus, here's a PSG rendition of Captain NEO from the first Darius:

Update: Here's more non-Sega ports that I missed:

R-Type

This was obvious, but it just had to be included. Plus, Irem also added an extra level to this.

Rastan Saga

Another Taito arcade port, but it's still good though they had to change a lot of things while doing so.

Captain Silver

Based off of one of Data East's worse games, Sega took it and made it much better.

Forgotten Worlds

Nothing more needs to be said

Strider

Unlike the last game and the next one, this port felt like an afterthought.

MERCS

I apologize in advance for choosing a video with audio commentary.

Ghouls 'n Ghosts

This port had the most changes when compared with the previous three.

Renegade

One of the two Technos titles that were brought to the SMS.

Double Dragon

And here's the other. However, II and III weren't ported to the SMS.

Vigilante

The other Irem port for the SMS.
