Mario-Combat

"Just when sprite flash was oversaturated..."

submission: Mario-Combat
date: April 13, 2009

...You managed to make something that rivals the coding skills of the big-name programmers such as NegativeOne, BoMToons, and Maelstormm. Graphically, it may not look like much, but I liked how you made cracks in the celing, columns, and Pipe; as well as Mario's custom run-cycle and the koopas' facial expressions. What I didn't like is that Bowser looked a little bit distorted, but I can overlook that. However, this could have used some more custom sprites here and there. The sound is a little bit of a mixed bag; on one hand you chose Super Mario Galaxy music, which I think is great. On the other hand, the sound effects could have used a bit more variety. Then there's the gameplay, which is well done for something like this. There's no bugs to speak of, but could have used customizable controls. However, I can overlook that because this is a demo, and a badass one at that.

What I liked about this:
-Use of Super Mario Galaxy music
-Custom graphics
-Nice gameplay engine
-No lag
-Well-executed zoom effect

What I didn't like:
-Not enough sound effect variety
-Could have used some more custom sprites

Overall: This is one example how a sprite flash should be done. It may not be perfect, but if you keep at it (whether you use sprites or hand-drawn vectors is up to you); you could put Proxicide, Alvin Earthworm, and a shitload of others to shame. So, here's a nine out of ten.

Girlchan in Paradise Ep1

"This left me with mixed feelings."

date: February 22, 2009

For a non-Awesome cartoon, the drawings were well done. However, the animation could have been done better. Then again, you intended this as satire. I liked how you animated Girl-chan's boobs though. What you could have improved on is the colors; they could have used some highlights and shadows.
The concept, while not that original, is still not used to the point of annoyance. I like anything that mocks anime, simply because I think that the vast majority of anime I've seen is either boring or just vanilla-flavored sucks. While this is not the next Stinkoman or Lizard Sphere X, it still worked. And now, the humor: while there are two parts where I chuckled; the jokes fell flat on their faces and the bad acting on purpose didn't help either. If you ever do a sequel, you should fix the flaws of this one and improve the good parts about it.

What I did like:
-Great concept
-Good animation
-Not an awesome cartoon
-Mocks the bad parts of anime.

What I didn't like:
-The joke delivery wasn't up to snuff with your previous stuff.
-Bad voice acting. Even though it was intentional, it sounded deadpan and detracted from the premise.

Overall: I can see that you put effort into this, but this was a case of good art quality brought down by mundane humor. Overall, here is a seven out of ten and if you ever do a sequel to this (which won't be for a while), try improving on this kind of satire. However, I'd like to see more non-awesome stuff from you.

Megaman Next (Remix) Test

"Great game!"

date: February 14, 2009

MaelStormm, this is easily your best game to date. The only reasons that I can think of regarding those who didn't like are:
-Use of Mega Man
-Use of Sprites
Just fuck what they think for now, seeing that you did an excellent job on the graphics. Most of this game's graphics are custom made and those that weren't were redrawn to look nicer. However, many of the sprites look out of place, but I can overlook that. On the other hand, I think you should learn how to use colored outlines which will make the game's graphics look even better than before. The sound effects are nice enough as is, but not everyone will like them. By contrast, the music selection kicks major ass and I liked the "Duel of Top" song from Thunder Force 5 (you need to make a ThunderForce game in Flash sometime). Now, for the gameplay, it may not be for keyboards, but you succeeded in making something badass!

What I did like:
-No bugs
-Excellent Spritework
-Great music selection
-Fun to play

What I didn't like:
-Background graphics could have been touched up a bit.
-A bit too dependent on a gamepad, but I can overlook this.

Overall: A nine out of ten I say. You should consider a Thunder Force Next sometime, seeing that you used TF5 music in the boss battle.

Author's Response:

Glad you enjoyed it. Lots more on the way as the version on my site keeps going through revisions. Since you mention it, it is kinda surprising that Adobe hasn't made a gamepad interface for flash since it's used in so many games these days (at least not one that I've seen directly from them).

Dunno about a TF Next, kinda got my plate full at the moment. Time will tell I guess.

The Edge of Torment

"Nice fight to the death, Doomhammr."

date: January 30, 2009

Why is it that every time someone submits a flash video such as this one, it gets flak for not being a cartoon. Even though I would like to see more hand-animated frame-by-frame, that won't stop me from enjoying this short. Now, onto the review: This may not be up to par with some 120,000-3,000,000 dollar indie film, much less a 5 million dollar or higher Hollywood movie in terms of effects and choreography; but for something made by three guys, they get the job done. While the acting could be a bit better, but seeing that you guys aren't professionals such as Dan Castellaneta (from Married with Children and the Simpsons) or Garry Chalk (from Beast Wars and the X-Files); I say that you pass for the effort.

What I liked:
-Good video quality (seeing that video files are huge).
-decent special effects for such a stringent budget.
-Good narration
-Something different

What I didn't like:
-Acting/choreography could be a bit better, but you and your friends are everyday people.

Overall: I think YouTube and Veoh's userbases need to learn a thing or two from you and your friends, Doomhammr. Therefore, here's a nine out of ten. Now if only people here weren't so hostile to flash videos.

Rats On Cocaine - Ep #10

"Vulgar cartoon comedy done right!"

date: January 23, 2009

This would make South Park, Family Guy, and all the stuff on Adult Swim look kid-friendly. One, the sex gags are fucking hilarious and I understood it all, too. (Note: One's ability to understand a joke doesn't matter if it's funny.) From female ejaculation to snuff, you have your bases covered here. Two, the sound is excellent. The music fit the situations that the Rats and Rabbits were in and I thank your friend for the effort he put in. The voice acting is how character voices in cartoons should be done. You pulled off every character with voice skills that are far better than most of this site's voice actors. Thirdly, while the animation wasn't the best this site has seen, it was enough to get the point across for this kind of comedy. Plus, I liked that part where Miss Molly shows Cage her nipple piercings with the saggy tits. What's next? Cage and Alice meet a couple of Peyote-addicted Iguanas or Chinchillas who shoot black tar heroin?

What I like:
-Sick and vulgar in a funny way. (This is how sex gags are done.)
-Excellent music
-Great voice acting
-No cheap gags (example: Y.T.M.N.D. or 4chan gags)
-Good art quality

What I didn't like:
-Animation could have been done better.

Conclusion: Dean Packis, you are one of the best internet cartoonists around. So, I am giving you a ten for this.

Cpt.Falcon Hyes

"Much better than any other SSB spoof."

submission: Cpt.Falcon Hyes
date: January 20, 2009

That sums this up quite well, but now it's time to be specific. Animation was how non-sprite VG flash should be done; hand-animated full body graphics that get tweened. All the characters are well-drawn, and those still-shots remind me of Ralph Bakshi's Heavy Traffic (which is a good movie by the way). In terms of Sound, there was no need to use Dragon Ball Z sound effects. There are other tv shows that could have sufficed just as well in that department. The music, on the other hand, was an excellent selection. I liked that reference to BattleToads, but that was ruined by certain DBZ reference that involved Cell.

What I did like:
-Good animation
-Good timing
-Use of lesser-known characters
-Nice music selection

What I didn't like:
-Use of DBZ sound effects
-Use of an obnoxious internet fad as an actual joke.

Here's an eight for this one, but try using sound effects that didn't come from DBZ next time. Plus, Keep practicing animation and timing it.

Abyssal

"Unnerving"

submission: Abyssal
date: January 9, 2009

Now this you don't see very often. A creepy, well-animated, thought out, atmospheric cartoon. Sure, there's no plot, but that would ruin it. I liked how you promoted your own site instead of some big-ass site that has 14 times as much cash as NG. And those were some really imaginitive monsters you made for this, and they remind me of the Ghostbusters cartoons, only much more unnerving.

What I liked:
-Creepy in the right ways
-Truly Imaginitive creature designs
-Excellent sound
-Proper mix of Hand animation and tweens

What I don't like:
-No Replay button

Conclusion: Bogleech this is your best cartoon so far, so how's about that ten out of ten?

January 10, 2009

Author's Response:

Thanks! I'm always conscious of using a lot of tweens but the sorts of animals that inspired this do nothing but drift in place themselves, letting prey come to them or just waving their lures.

Ghostbusters was definitely a big influence on my style in general, it was THE thing I was into as a kid and pretty much solely for those goofy yet totally warped ghosts :)

$00pah NiN10Doh!

"$00pah animation with really shitty jokes."

submission: $00pah NiN10Doh!
date: January 4, 2009

Before I start the actual review, I'd like to say something:
To Kirbopher: What the hell were you on when you came up with the jokes for this one? Not a single one of them was funny, and Internet memes are NOT FUNNY!

To the Zirbes brothers: You guys are great animators, but your Pokemon segments weren't sexy or funny. Hell, was there any reason to censor them other than cheap humor.

To Legendary Frog: No to be offensive, but even though you can draw, I never found your stuff to be funny.

And now the actual review:
Animation wise, this was better than the first one and I'll give this credit for that. However, it went out of synchronization in a few parts. I don't like that Notorious guy, but at least his cartoons didn't suffer from sound errors.
As for the voice acting, while the Kirby segments were well done, other parts they were either stale (Rina-Chan and Fran Louise) or way overdone (Chris Zito). This results in this collab in being more obnoxious than funny. Speaking of which...
Not a single short in this one was funny at all. Even though I noticed the disclaimer about this being not the funniest thing on NG, that didn't matter much. The jokes, while related to the subjects, didn't make me laugh. At least ZekeySpaceyLizard's piss take on this was much funnier. As for the subjects themselves, while I do appreciate taunts at Pikmin, Tetris (which HAS been done before), and the Eggerland Chronicles; every other subject has been done already. Hell, you should have used lesser known games such as R-Type, Run Saber, and other obscure NES and Super NES titles here.

What I did like:
-Great Animation

What I didn't like:
-Sound went out of sync in some parts.
-Almost all the games spoofed here have been done already.
-Piss Poor jokes; at least the first Nin10Doh! had two funny parts and Internet memes aren't funny.
-Beyond the Kirby Super Star segments, the voice acting was either overdone or underdone.

Conclusion: For great animation to get a high score from me, it has to have well-thought out content to boot. No offence to everyone else, but this is getting no more than a Five out of ten from me.

$00pah NiN10Doh! 2

"From one of the Metal Gear Funnies guys..."

submission: $00pah NiN10Doh! 2
date: January 3, 2009

...Is something that was funnier than both of the Nin10Doh! collabs. A lot of the people who gave this a low score obviously didn't get the message. This was meant to mock Kirbopher (who I think is a great voice actor) and the Zirbes brothers (who are great animators) and their inability to come up with any good videogame jokes (they just used the same outdated, overused, unfunny gags that would make I-mockery staffer Protoclown look creative). A badly animated cartoon may be redeemed with great humor, but great animation won't compensate for crappy jokes (including internet memes/fads).

What I did like:
-Actually funny
-Proper use of bad animation.

What I didn't like:
-No mockeries of Rina-Chan or Tomamoto.
-The fact that this won't faze $00pah Nin10Doh! one bit. Instead, it'll piss a lot of people off.

Conclusion: Here's an Eight for being actually funny. Too bad, this won't change my opinion of you ZSL.

B-Roll: Tickle Fight

"Great animation, but wasn't that funny."

date: December 22, 2008

LiLg, you're a great animator, and I'll give you credit for trying your hardest. However, the voice acting wasn't that great (Tomamoto is hit or miss with me, but Francine is severely overrated). I'll also credit you for being original, yet the execution leaves much to be desired. Even though the pee joke was the only gag here, it could have been timed better.

What I liked:
-Great animation
-Tomamoto did a decent part on his behalf, but he's no Mel Blanc (The Looney Toones guy) or Ian James Corlett (Mega Man and Cheetor).

What I didn't like:
-Anticlimatic in a bad way.
-Comedic Timing could be better.
-Fran Louise sounded unconvincing (you should ditch her).

Overall: Here's a seven out of ten from a fellow Louisianian. Plus, I can do character voices if the need arises.
