100 Audio Reviews

47 w/ Responses

Respect, that's pretty awesome.

Paragon X9, I've always have been a fan of your stuff although I haven't been keeping track with the Audio Portal for years. (That explains why I don't have very many music reviews.) It's about time I gave you my two cents...

Instrumentation: Clever use of drums, bass, and the usual electronic fare. Plus, the use of layers shows that you haven't lost it at all. I'm a sucker for intense music, especially when it's done right.
Arrangement: When shifting from one mood to another, you were very cautious when switching from easy-going to intense. Plus, I like how you implemented that song from Twilight Princess. The notation in this was exceptional, and shows that you still have the ears of a composer.
Other: Aside from that Zelda bit, this was pretty much original in the creativity regard for someone who is somewhat synonymous with video game remixes. Plus, it's nice to see something different from you. However, the filesize for this is a bit on the large side, but I'm thankful that you didn't export this at max kbps. (That eats up hard drive space quickly.)

What I liked:
-Great instrumentation and arrangement
-Nice balance between intense and easy-going.
-Mostly original
-Top-notch timing

What I didn't like:
-The filesize is a bit large for a download.

Overall: Paragon X9, this still shows why you and Nemesis Theory are two of my favorite musicians on Newgrounds. Here's your ten and I look forward to you two collaborating.

Strange, yet catchy

This has to be the most bizarre Techno song I have heard. Truth is, I don't usually write music reviews, but thought that you needed one. Let's get started...

Instrumentation: while such may be suited for Drum & Bass, you took that to your advantage and made something unique.
Composition: Another testament to creativity in this field, which is saying something. It definitely fits that villain mood quite well and can hear it in more than just the flash you're currently making.
Other: The only problem is the ending where it just doesn't really loop properly with the beginning. On the other hand, I appreciate you not going the 192+ Kbps route, which results in a passable filesize.

What I do like:
-Passable filesize
-Catchy
-Original
-Nice mood setter

What I don't like:
-Doesn't loop properly

Overall: Here's a nine for you.

Eyelids-pie responds:

>8D ahh haha
wow!
thanks so much!
your words fill me with great joy

Exhilirating!

I don't usually review music submissions here, but just for you, Here's my opinion:

When it comes to instrumentation, you have a very nice selection ranging in from chip beats, cymbals, and everyday electronic instrumentation. Plus, the way you mixed and composed it is very badass! It sounds like it needs to be in a multitude flash games. I'm surprised that no one on here has commissioned you to make custom tracks for their creations. However, my only gripe about this is the file size: Something like this shouldn't be over seven megabytes.

What I do like:
-Nice instrumentation
-Atmospheric
-Great composition and mixing
-Really Catchy

What I don't like:
-The filesize

Overall: Here's a ten for you, DJ Harlock/Cross 666.

DJHarlock responds:

:D Thank you good sir, makes me feel a little more humbled knowing someone out there likes it!

Better than the original.

As much as I loved the original song and flash that was made back in 2000; this was better sung and arranged. Allow me to explain...

A big difference between this and the original is that this has actual melody and harmony in the singing. Something a select few on here have, but this is a notable improvement from the original. However, the voice effects may be cool, but I liked the original's vocal variety and it was easier to figure out what was being sung. Another thing I have noticed is that the lyrics have been rewritten and elaborated on. In other words, no complaints in that compartment. As for the instrumentation, I like how it sounds like the original, but made it more metallic. Plus, I found this to pretty damned funny, although that wasn't your intent.

What I do like:
-Improved Melody/harmony
-Nice instrumentation
-Better lyrics
-Funny

What I don't like:
-Lacks the vocal variety of the original
-The metallic effect can be hard to make out at times.

Overall: Evil Dave, how would you like a nine out of ten?

Marvelous job, Elite Ferrex

It's too bad this was used in only one submission, because this could be used in:
-A Castlevania Flash game
-Any Game by MaelstormM (The Megaman Next guy)
-A Montage sequence.
But enough of that, here's the review:
Now, I may not have heard the original songs that this was based on, but that has not affected my enjoyment of this under appreciated gem. Truth be told, I'm not that much into reviewing music, but I do recognize a great song when I hear it. The instrumentation, while common in this type of music, complemented the energetic nature of this song. This, of course, shows your knowledge of musical tempo and how it was implied. As for the composition/score, you have lots going on that makes this sound like a winner. Unfortunately, the most notable problem is the file size: for a three-minute song, 6.7 Megabytes seems a bit ludicrous.

What I did like:
-Energetic
-Great composition and tempo
-Clever use of sound samples

What I didn't like:
-Huge filesize for something that's almost three minutes.

Overall: For somebody known for VG remixes and kick ass ones at that, here's your ten.

Proof that Punk isn't dead.

Evil-Dog, even though I am personally sick of Christmas music; you have done a great job on this. Plus, I agree with you on those zero-spamming bastards.* It's been a long time since I listened to Punk Rock, and you pretty much did the genre justice.

In terms of instrumentation, Great job on the guitars and the drums. As much as I like electronic music; I still have respect to rock, even if many of the bands I like have screwed the pooch at some point. Plus, the tempo of this cover song just kicks ass with a fast pace and lots of energy. Not to mention that the Santa bit at the beginning was pretty funny. However, the only problem with this is it's a cover song, but I won't hold that against you because this is an excellent product; and that's what counts.

What I do like:
-Nice, fast tempo with plenty of energy to go around.
-Kick-ass Instrumentation
-Funny at the beginning

What I don't like:
-Not very original, but that won't affect your score.

Overall: Here's a ten for something that I enjoyed quite a bit. *=Maybe those Zero Bombers would make for excellent material for your next game. (Demonic Gloat)

Just Plain Rockin'!

Aside from being one of the best frame-by-frame animators on the site, you are also great musician to boot. I can see this being used in a credits sequence of some sort. Ok, let's get started...

In terms of instrumentation, you sure did a great job selecting which instrument would be fitting. Plus, I like that guitar solo that you did for this. For something that's improvised, it's a lot better than a lot of the musicians on here. I can't believe that you and Nanashi aren't in more musician favorites, but the sparse am-mount of songs are the reason why. Here's a hint, I think it's time that you started submitting again.

What I approve of:
-Excellent guitar solo
-Clever synth selection
-Great composition for something that was improvised.
-Seems that it would be used in a opening/closing sequence.

What I disapprove of:
-Nothing at the moment

Overall: Here's a ten for you Keicho, and I would like for you to submit more of your stuff here.

Surprisingly catchy.

I see where you're coming from regarding the author's comments: I first came here in 2000, signed up in 2001, but haven't submitted anything until this year. Truth is, I'm not much of a music critic, which is why don't usually write reviews for music submissions.

Instrumentwise, I like the variety that you have going here for this piece. Kind of reminds me of the Sega game Rez. In terms of composition, it may take some getting used to, but once you do get used to it; it becomes very catchy. As for ambiance, while it may not be up there with Nanashi's latest AP songs; I can see this being used as some sort of sound cues.

What I do like:
-Catchy
-Original
-Nice instrumentation and composition

What I don't like:
-Takes time to get used to.
-May not be up to everyone's tastes.

Overall: For a first audio submission, this is one of the better beginnings. Here's a nine out of ten, and keep practicing.

Xalkie responds:

Thanks for the feedback. ^-^ I'll try my best with later submissions. I'm still learning allot so thanks for the understanding. Here it to hoping I can get my comp back up to standards soon to make more musacs.

Pretty epic!

This really sounds like something that you would hear from Star Ocean, R-Type, The Lemmings Chronicles, or a really obscure anime. This song really proves that you can do something original, and you're usually synonymous with Robotech flash. (Nothing wrong with that as long as it's not the only kind of stuff that you do.) With that out of the way...

In terms of instrumentation, you did a great job selecting various string and brass instruments, which can make or break a song in my book. Truth is, I prefer music that sets moods/atmospheres rather than those that tell stories/convey messages. Then there's the composition, which is really impressive. I usually don't write reviews for music very often, but I think all that time making arranged Robotech music has paid off.

What I do like:
-Great composition
-Nice instrument selection
-Original, but the execution must work in order for that to be worth something. (And it did in this case.)

What I don't like:
-Nothing at the moment

Overall: You definitely have the composition skills worthy of being in many flash movies. Army Ranger/Nanashi, here's a ten out of ten!

Nanashi responds:

Wow, that is one hell of a review. Thanks! While I'm appreciative of reviews that say 'Awesomez! 10!' (Normally on my flash, not my music), it means a whole lot more when someone actually explains WHY something is good or bad, and I'm not just saying this because you had no cons this time.

If I had been getting this kind of feedback from the start, I think I'd be a lot further along. Again, thanks for your time and words.

This is an underrated jewel!

I'm surprised that you aren't in more flash movies, Chris. Like Sam Haft, you are both a great actor and one of the site's better singers. With that out of the way...

In terms of voice range, it may not be up to par with what you see and hear in music stores, but you chose which to use well. Plus, your singing skills are excellent, unlike most other VA's on this site. Then there's the lyrics, which I'm no expert on even though I took a chorus class back in sixth grade; they have a nice pace for this kind of music. Not to mention, that this also doubles a nice-sounding loop.

What I do like:
-Good singing
-Nice lyrics
-Great voice selection.

What I don't like:
-While the loop aspect might be nice, It may unintentionally annoy people.

Overall: Here's a ten out of ten for making something good.

I've been on here for over a decade and have a high level, so fucking what? Regarding my MSN and Trillian accounts: Request to be added.
