Reasons why I dislike Transformers The Movie (1986)

Posted by FightingSeraph - July 1st, 2009

I know a lot of you will hate me for posting this, but as I said before, I just didn't enjoy it that much. Even though it has its good points (the animation quality and the voice acting); its flaws prevent it from being that Definitive Transformers Experience that I read about all over the internet.

1. Convoluted and Contrived: When compared to the TV series, this just feels forced; from the Decepticons' ambush on the Autobot shuttle to Hot Rod becoming Rodimus Prime. And what's with Kranix and his homeworld? It's understandable that the writers wanted to show the power of Unicron, but even that derelict civilization in the episode Cosmic Rust had an explanation. Plus, why did they kill Kranix off anyway? That was just a cheap, pointless way of showing off the (not so) awesome might of the Sharkticons. Even the most memorable moments of this film felt contrived (The Death of Optimus Prime, Starscream's Coronation, and the fight between Hot Rod and Galvatron).

2. Most of the new characters weren't properly introduced: With the exceptions of Unicron and his reformatted decepticons, the Quintessons, the Junkions, and Rodimus Prime; most of the new characters lacked a proper introduction. Then again, the TV series had this same problem although it wasn't as bad.

3. More of the same: When you really think about it, TFTM is just like an episode from the TV series only with a longer length. This isn't a bad thing, but I wanted a bit more out of it.

4. The soundtrack: Although I liked The Touch, Unicron's theme, White Lion's intro song, and the theme that played when the Decepticons stormed Autobot City; most of the songs in the soundtrack were not very interesting and quite cheezy.

5. Poor Planning: When compared to the TV series, this wasn't planned out very well and would have been better if they had Bob Budiansky and Simon Furman had supervised the planning process.

6. It led to the cartoon's cancellation: One would think that by killing Optimus and most of the other popular characters off in a somewhat senseless way; the result would be declining toy sales. This, in other words, led to the series' cancellation. To be honest, I thought the US TV series could have lasted longer, or at the very least, have the Headmasters series dubbed and released stateside.

I've explained the reasons why I disliked this movie. However, I don't think it is a piece of shit and, as I mentioned before, it has its good points:
-The Voice acting
-The Animation quality
-Unicron
It may be a disappointment, but it is still worth watching. However, it can't hold a candle to other independent animated films such as Fist of the North Star (1986), Heavy Traffic (a 1973 Ralph Bakshi film), and Ark (a CGI film made in 2004 by the same people behind FF: The Spirits Within, only that it is far superior).
